The lost wax process is a multi-step technique for creating near-net-shape metal parts. Here’s a breakdown of how it works, and how Lava modernizes each step:

  1. Pattern Creation (The “Wax”):
    Traditional Method: A precise wax or plastic pattern is injection molded into a metal die.
    The Lava Advantage: We use SLA and MJF 3D printing to create the patterns directly from your CAD file. This eliminates the need for expensive tooling (the mold), drastically reducing lead time and cost for initial samples and short runs. This is also known as rapid investment casting.
  2. Assembly & Tree Building: Multiple wax patterns are attached to a central wax sprue to form a “tree,” allowing multiple parts to be cast in a single cycle.
  3. Shell Building (Investing): The wax tree is repeatedly dipped into a ceramic slurry, coated with fine sand, and dried. This process is repeated until a thick, durable ceramic shell is formed around the wax.
  4. Dewaxing: The entire shell is heated in an autoclave or furnace, which melts and “loses” the wax pattern, leaving behind a perfect hollow ceramic mold cavity. This is where the name “lost wax” comes from.
  5. Pouring: The ceramic shell (mold) is preheated, and molten metal is poured into the cavity. The metal can be anything from aluminum, brass, and bronze to stainless steel, silver, or gold.
  6. Cooling & Break-Out: After the metal solidifies and cools, the hardened ceramic shell is broken away via vibration or water blasting, revealing the raw metal casting tree.
  7. Cut-Off & Finishing: The individual castings are cut from the sprue. We then provide secondary finishing services like grinding, sandblasting, heat treatment, and machining to achieve your final specifications.
